Cold forging is the collective name of plastic processing such as cold die forging, cold extrusion and cold upsetting. It is a forming process for materials below the recrystallization temperature, and is forging below the recovery temperature. It is customary to call forging without heating the blank in production as cold forging. Cold forging materials are mostly aluminum and some alloys, copper and some alloys, low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, low alloy structural steel with less deformation resistance at room temperature and better plasticity. Cold forging parts have good surface quality and high dimensional accuracy, which can replace some cutting processes. Cold forging can strengthen the metal and improve the strength of the parts.
Cold forging processing, also called cold volume forming, is a manufacturing process as well as a processing method. It is basically the same as the cold stamping process. Cold forging process is also composed of three elements: material, die and equipment. Only the material in stamping process is mainly plate, while the material in cold forging process is mainly disc or wire.
